Excessive sports without fitness leads to disaster

For a decade now the very first Diwali gift I get is from a mother of a young lady patient who had come to see me 11 yrs ago for severe back pain. Very unlike me, I had advised rest for a month.

Yes, there is a role for rest, medicines, injections and surgeries in back pain, just that they are advised way too much & too often. Rest didn’t mean bed-rest or no movement at all. It meant not over-loading the spine but yet having a pro-active rehab program. 

It is unfortunate when a young (11yrs) sportsperson playing golf ends up getting an injury in the lumbar spine (low back) because of over-loading the spine when the body isn’t ready for it. Just practising the sport for hours and hours without focusing on fitness is a recipe for disaster.
