Ski Prodigy, Struggling With Identity Crisis After Premature Retirement, Takes Her On Life
24 year old Brittany George was training for the Beijing Winter Olympics but then had a back injury, which forced her to take premature retirement from Australia's aerial ski team, which she was a part of from 2017 to 2020.
Three months ago, in a podcast she spoke about her struggle to find a new identity. Listen to her, it’ll break your heart.
And a week back she took her own life.
Just pause right there.
We, the society, are failing our youth. Yes, it’s a mental health issue, but it’s us who have created these circumstances. Each single one of us. And don’t you become all self-righteous and say that she was weak and a quitter as you wouldn’t have ever travelled as fast on your feet as she used to.
She was merely 24. All elite athletes, or those aspiring to be one, should be encouraged to first be just normal kids and youth, and not be athletes first. Parents, schools, sports academies and government, all have to take responsibility of the mess we have created. And it's not limited to sports alone but found in all walks of life.
Just let kids be. If you so badly want those medals and trophies at any cost, get as many as you want made, because in eagerness to win those pieces of metals, we are losing those who should mean a lot more to us. We all need stand by them when they need us the most.
Personally, I try. I fail. I get up again and I try again. And that's the best I can do. Try.
